for clarity
Do you have a choice on upper case or lower case letters when writing and I can I assume parenthesis are required
as an after thought I wonder if italics can be used.

By IUPAC rules state of matter should be written using normal letters in parentheses - like (l), (g), (s), (aq).

On paper or ms word i would use lower case script L, but i find the lower case "L" to be easily mistaken for numeral 1 in online digital font, so just as a (bad) habit I often use L for liquid. Sorry
