Does dibromohexane float on water?
« on: April 23, 2021, 10:41:03 PM »
I am watching a demonstration on bromine decolorization where bromine water was mixed with hexene. The final product is two separated clear liquids with one floating on the other. My thought process is that the density of water is smaller than the density of dibromohexane so therefore the top liquid would be water but I have read else where on forums that it is the opposite way. I am unsure who to trust.

Check spezific gravities. Probably you have mixture of cyclohexene and Dibromocyclohexane. This will not seperate and be on top of water.
