Combustion behavior

I had to carry out an experiment in which i heated carbon and silicon powder over a bunsen burner. Both began to glow but nothing else happened. Should something happen? I thought that CO would arise.

What possibilities have carbon and silicon to react. Note both elements are in the same group.
