Hmm why is this called 4,6-dichlorohept-1-ene

I generated the name from ACD's chemsketch. Shouldn't it be heptene instead of hept-1-ene? According to the software, it has the most accurate IUPAC naming system. just curious.

Strict following of IUPAC rules you always designate the location of the double bond, such as what chemsketch gave you.
However, it is also accepted by IUPAC that if the double (or triple) bond is on the #1 carbon then you can not label the position and it is understood to be at carbon #1.

i wouldnt bother with names so much. really, there are thousands of names for the same molecule.
ok i am exagerrating... but as long as it leads to the same structure, why bother so much.

personally, i feel that testing on nomenclature is silly, although essential at a lower level. but once you start studying at higher levels of chemistry, then perhaps it would be good to not concern yourself with names.

juz my 2 cents

i always liked nomenclature. i don't know how helpful it is. but sometimes it helps you differentiate between structures. for example when you are trying to find all isomeric dibromo-n-pentanes. then it helps you not to get one twice if you name every structure.
Math and alcohol don't mix, so... please, don't drink and derive!
