Can I3- oxidize Fe(II) to Fe(III)
« on: July 05, 2021, 11:15:10 AM »
1)  I read that " the I3-  can oxidize Fe(II) to Fe(III)

But looking at the standard potential  reduction I see:

Fe(III) --> Fe(II)    E° = 0,771
I3- --> I-    E° =  0,53

Now
Ecell = E cat - E ano. = 0,53 - 0,771 ---> negative value so the oxidation shouldn t occour....Am I wrong?

2) another question...can Bromide oxidize Fe(II) to Fe(III) ?? I think yes looking at the standard cell potential

THANKS :)

In what conditions?

A solution with KI + Fe(II) and then I add CuSO4

I read that CuSO4  is reduced by I- and I3- is formed. This species than can oxidize Fe(II) to Fe(III)

I don't know if it's right...

Doesn't sound viable.

Yes, the first stage - with production of CuI - works. But from what I remember oxidation of Fe(II) with I2 requires some complexing agent, that changes the formal potential for Fe(II)/Fe(III) oxidation.

And bromide can't oxidize anything. What would it be reduced to?

Sorry I mean Bromine (Br2)
