Help with question about separation processes
« on: September 18, 2021, 07:51:15 PM »
Hi!

I have an assignment on separation processes that goes as follows:

"Explain how you would separate a mixture of the following materials: water, alcohol, sand, salt, and iron scraps. Present it in video format."

So far, I've figured out that the scraps can be taken out using a magnet – easy enough! I have also thought of employing decantation to separate the sand from the mixture, but I'm not sure if that'll work with the alcohol and salt mixed in. Having a hard time with all else. Any help?

Also, since I intend to make an animation explaining it, pointers on proper lab equipment used in those processes would be appreciated!

Thanks in advance.

Did you heard about the distillation process ? It allows to separate fluids on the basis of their different boiling points (salt will not evaporate during the process).

Decantation will work for water - alcohol - salt - sand mixture.
