iodoform test on phenylethanone!!!
« on: October 28, 2006, 05:57:57 AM »
i want to know the how fast the reaction of phenylethanone on iodoform test is!!!
i predict that the reaction would be very slow since the benzene ring provide a extra stability on the molecule by mesomeric (resonance) effect!!!in my experiment, the phenylethanone form 2 layer with little yellow ppt!!!

and the speed of the reaction is that: ethanal > propanone > phenylethanone

however, when i compare the case of ethanal and propanone. the products's stability of them should be benzoate > methanate > ethanate!!!

according to that above, the reaction rate of phenylethanone on iodoform test should be the fastest!!! that is opposive to my prediction!!!
so , i think that the reaction rate of phenylethanone on iodoform test is the fastest, but the poor solubility of phenylethanone to the solution only can give a likely slowest rate of reaction when we observed by out naked eyes!!!

is that correct???

besides, this is my first post on this forums, i am a high school science student from hong kong!!! nice to meet you all!!!
