Lab safety mistake
« on: February 08, 2022, 03:50:59 AM »
Hi,

I performed a Grignard reaction experiment synthesizing triphenylmethanol involving bromobenzene, diethyl ether, iodine, methyl benzoate, sulfuric acid, and sodium bicarbonate. Though I wore gloves throughout the experiment, I stupidly took them off while cleaning my glassware, and now my hands have an odour.

Fast forward a couple hours later, I’ve run water over my hands for 15 minutes, washed them with soap multiple times, and the smell is still persisting.

There is no irritation or redness on my hands. Is there any other action I should take (like more washing or getting professional help), or will the smell go away with time?

Thanks in advance!
