6 Amino Penicillianic acid project
« on: February 28, 2022, 07:46:22 AM »
Hey! I am new to research and I am trying a project on the condensation to form phenylpenicillin (https://pubchem.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/compound/6-_Benzoylamino_penicillanic-acid) from 6-APA (https://pubchem.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/compound/6-Aminopenicillanic-acid#section=Crystal-Structures). I essentially mix 6apa dissolved in basic aqueous solution and benzoyl chloride in propanone to make the product. Because our lab doesnt have any spectroscopes and such, I acidify the solution and separate it with ethyl ethanoate. I am getting really bad yield with this process and a lot is hard to control. Does anyone have a better method or even a different topic involving the chemistry of 6APA? Thanks so much!

Do you have access to SciFinder?  If there is a better protocol, this would be one way to find it.

Acid will open the beta-lactam. I agree, you need a protocoll.
