If I want to separate 2 things. Their Rf in the current solvent system is 0.7 and 0.8 i.e. extremely high, not good for separation. Then to lower their Rf should I use a more polar or less polar mobile phase than the one I am using now?? please explain!

Less polar if it is straight-phase silica gel. What system do you use currently? Can you give the structure if your compounds?

@OP, Can you provide a simple model that rationalizes this phenomenon?
