Ethylene glycol in paint

(1/1)

cluelesswonderer:
Peasantry question from member of non chemistry public. :D

Ethylene glycol in household paint or primer. What is its purpose, and does it pose a health hazard once the paint/primer is dry? Does it continue to offgas or contribute in any way to air pollution in the home? And if so, in what way? Does painting over top with a coat of paint that doesn’t contain EG change anything in terms of exposure post cure?

Thanks!

Hunter2:
If its in, what I dont beleave, then it works as a solvent.

cluelesswonderer:
In that case it would evaporate and not be an issue once the paint is cured. Is that correct?

Hunter2:
Yes, but this will go very slowly, because the vapour pressure is low.

cluelesswonderer:
Ok. I understand. Any information on how long ethylene glycol would take to evaporate out of paint?
