Acid concentration in nitroglycerin production
« on: January 16, 2024, 12:48:42 PM »
Hello everyone. On one site, for the purpose of school laboratory work, I read that for the preparation of nitroglycerin should take 8 ml of glycerol, 30 ml of BOTH CONCENTRATED nitric acid and 60 ml of concentrated sulfuric acid. GPT Chat calculated from the reaction CH2OH-CHOH-CH2OH + 3HNO3 [in the presence of H2SO4] => CH2ONO2-CHONO2-CH2ONO2 + 3H2O that we will get 20 g (12.5 ml) of nitroglycerin.
Do I have to take concentrated nitric acid, or can I use the more common 56% nitric acid? If so, how much more? And are the proportions written above true?
I would be very grateful for your help

Sorry, per the forum rules we don't discuss explosives.

And no, ChatGPT is not reliable, and the result it gave is off by about 20%. Hardly surprising, don't use it for calculations.
