Cu2O Unit Cell

(1/1)

jgr:
Hi,

I was just wondering what shape the Cu+ ions (ignoring oxygen) form in the Cu2O lattice (image attached). I was thinking that it is Body-Centred Cubic however I'm not sure.

Thanks,

mjc123:
Try drawing out a unit cell of simple cubic, BCC and FCC. See if you can find in any of them a tetrahedral arrangement of atoms such as you see for the Cu atoms in the Cu2O unit cell.

jgr:
Hi, thanks for your reply.

I just tried drawing it out and it still seems to be BCC.

mjc123:
Well, the O atoms in that unit cell are clearly BCC. Do you see a regular tetrahedron of O's anywhere?
