This is a quick question. What is a beta carbon and what is a beta hydroxy ketone? I cannot find it in my textbook.

carbon that is next to the carbonyl group is an alpha carbon.
beta carbon is next to the alpha carbon. so beta hydroxy ketone has a hydoxy
group at the beta position, like the following one
HO-CH2-CH2-CO-CH3
      beta alpha     alpha
