monobromated compounds
« on: November 09, 2006, 05:08:24 AM »
heya guys

I have a problem with a question i got in a test
It says "A student had two distinct compounds, A and B, which both had the molecular formula C5H12.  When reacted with bromine in the presence of uv light, A formed only on monobrominated compound whereas B formed three.  Deduce the structures of A and B and name them.

I have to admit i have no idea what monobrominated compound is.  I was thinking it might be like a Carbon Hydrogen and Bromine compound...
Any help with this question would be greatly appreciated if you can spare it

MONObrominated means it only gets one bromine molecule per molecule.

MONObrominated means it only gets one bromine molecule per atom.

Nope, it means there is one ATOM of bromine per MOLECULE :)

C2H6 brominated forms C2H5Br
C3H8 forms CH3-CHBr-CH3 and CH3-CH2-CH2-Br when brominated

Think about normal (unbranched) pentane (A) and branched with tertiary carbon atom (B).

Of course  -   that's what I ment.

per molecule of your resulting compound - like in AWK's examples.
