Why it is Cl (not Cl2) ?

3HCl + HNO3 --------> NOCl + 2H2O + 2Cl


 If anybody know why it is Cl (not Cl2) in this reaction? What does Cl mean?
 
 Also I want to know how aqua regia solves Au?

Au (s) + 3 NO3- (aq) + 6 H+ (aq) ? Au3+ (aq) + 3 NO2 (g) + 3 H2O (l)
Au3+ (aq) + 4 Cl- (aq) ? AuCl4- (aq)

And you are correct, it must be Cl2

All very well explained here, google usually helps ;)

If the Chlorine is in statu nascendi you can write it as "Cl".
