Lewis Structure of ClF3
« on: November 14, 2006, 05:54:45 AM »
Could someone help me with drawing the Lewis Structure of ClF3?
I seem to have counted 28 valence electrons total but i can only seem to get 26 when i use the Cl as the center atom with 3 unpaired electrons per flourine and one unpaired electron for the chloride along with the 6 shared pairs, so is there some kind of exception to get Cl to have more then the four bonds?

The structure you drew is correct.

Chlorine can expand its octet so that up to 7 covalent bonds are possible: 7+7*3 = 28.
