  Why gold sol is used as a standard in gold number of a colloid?

To state the obvious, the expression gold number is used because gold sol is the standard in the tests on hydrocolloids.

I guess it was chosen because it was relatively easy to obtain: http://mrsec.wisc.edu/Edetc/nanolab/gold/index.html
