Organic chemistry help please...
« on: November 20, 2006, 10:16:30 AM »
Hi all,

I've been trying to help a friend with some homework she's been given, but I've hit one question I'm not sure about. My chemistry is all 15 years behind me, so any help would be useful!

"You are given 4 unlabeled bottles. One contains Propan-1-ol, one contains Propan-2-ol, one contains Propanal, and one contains Propanone. Using chemical methods only identify the contents of the bottles."

Thanks,
    Andy.

Boiling points:

1-Propanol 97C
2-Propanol 82C
Propanal 48C
Propanone 56C

Just heat your unidentified compounds  with a thermometer in solution to check the boiling point of them ;)

If you are to distinguish between them chemically then you will need to use a test that will test for primary alcohol, secondary alcohol, aldehyde and ketone.

Try looking for info on things like Tollen's reagent, dichromate reactions etc....
