Hello,

I am not sure where the appropriate place to post this question is, so I just decided to use this general one.

I tasted (on my tongue) a very very small amount of cocaine about 12 days ago and will need to take a hair drug test this coming Friday. Do you think this will be enough to cause a positive result on the test. I would estimate it was about half the size of a bb (from say, a bb gun). However, it was enough to cause my throat to get a little numb.

Please let me know if you have any insight on this.

At the time, I didn't know that I would be taking a drug test in the near future. Had I known, I would not have done this.

I think that is a urine antibody test, not a hair test.  I didn't see where it said specifically on that page, but those numbers make sense for the EMIT test, not a hair test.

I would guess (don't really know tho) that a hair test goes a lot farther back in time, back to when you grew the hair.  In that case, very recent use might not show up yet, especially if they don't take the hair down to the root.  They might do that though, don't know.

No, it will not show up. Unless your hair grows really really fast, and they actually pull the hair out from the follicles. But they will cut it, and depending on how close to the scalp they cut it, they could be ignoring easily the past 3 months of info.

It also depends on the type of cocaine and them...chemistry of it!

No idea how close to the skin they cut the hair, but hair grows about 1.5 cm per month. Part that is hidden below the skin surface has about - say - 3-4 mm. So after two weeks place that could test positive is most likely about 3-4 mm above the skin surface.

3 months - about 4.5 cm - close to 2 inches.

Complementing information of Borek, Hair growth varies between 0,7 and 3,6 cm/month, a mean of 1 cm/month is generally accepted.

The Hair growth rate depend of:
- Age
- Gender
- Ethnicity / racial factor (caucasoid type, africoid type or mongoloid type)
- Interindividual variability (e.g: color, density, diameter). The duration of stages growth may
  influence length of hair density of a scalp
- Anatomical Region

Acc. to Wenning. Potential Problems with Interpretation of Hair Analysis Results. Forensic Science International (2000)107:5-12, the detection window of hair for cocaine is: [ >3d - m/y].

In the same paper we can find information about cut-off values and Levels of Positivity, cut-off Value and Frecuency of Consumption, Relationship between drug dose and hair concentration and Time course of appearence in hair.

FOR COCAINE: (cut-off value and levels of positivity)
For the Cut-off 1ng/mg

Levels of Positivity: LOW (<4 ng/mg) ; MEDIUM (4-20ng/mg) and HIGH (>20 ng/mg)

Finally, The Hair sample Collection is cut hair segments at the base at the crown AS CLOSE TO THE SCALP AS POSSIBLE. If the samples are shorter than 3cm, we'll need collect hair from pubic zone.

I was basing all that on my hair growth, as I know my hair does not grow anywhere near that fast!
