Alcohol Synthesis Question
« on: December 06, 2006, 04:43:56 PM »
So, I'm rather stuck on the following synthesis problem.

I know we're usually supposed to throw out some sort of idea ourselves, but I'm having a tough time even getting started. Is there any way to add a protecting group, but then instead of removing the protecting group, remove the other hydrocarbon?

Anyways, all I'm looking for is a push in the right direction. Thanks for the help.

Why do you want to remove anything? You have to add alkyl groups, the tertiary alcohol is your target isn't it?

hint: how would you make butan-2-ol from MeCHO?

Thanks for the responses, I got my thinking really mixed up and overthought the problem.
