Bronsted acids and bases, conjugate bases and acids
« on: December 07, 2006, 12:42:28 AM »
1)
HNO3 (aq)+ NPO42-(aq) <--> NO3-(aq)+ H2PO4-(aq)

I understand the definition of a bronsted acid and a bronsted base, but how do you know which pair is the bronsted acid and base and which pair is the conjugate acid and base?

Could you explain this to me?

2)  What is the chemical equ. when calculating the pH of Ba(OH)2
Essentially, I need to find the conjugate of Ba(OH)2.  It's a base, so its conjugate should be... BaO2H?

Thanks in advance! :)

An acid is a proton donor, a base is a proton aceptor. Conjugated base for this acid  is the rest of acid after proton donoring.

Write down a formal dissociation od Ba(OH)2

Conjugated base for this acid  is the rest of acid after proton donoring.

And maybe conjugated acid of an base is its rest after acepting proton. However, we prefer saying about  conjugated base  rather than conjugated acid.

Don't count me in. I have no preferences here, as I am using both conjugated acids and bases.
