Nomenclature - di-, tri- VS Bis-, tris-
« on: January 23, 2007, 10:02:19 PM »
right now i'm taking the second part of inorganic chem in college and i'm just looking over some of the nomenclature for some of these metallic structures and i can't seem to understand the difference between:
di-, tri-, etc... and bis-, tris-, tetrakis-, etc.
i even see them used in one compound sometimes. can someone enlighten me?

it sometimes clears out ambiguities

you say bisphosphoglycerate if you are talking about glycerate with two phosphates
diphosphoglycerate would be glycerate with one biphosphate group

Bis(di-chloro-dimethyl-)benzene
you say bis so you don't have to say di twice
