Good evening everyone :)

I hope you guys could help me if you know the answer.

in the rxn of synthesize RuSCN2(dcbpy)2 [dcbpy=2,2'-bipyridyl dicarboxylic acid] from RuCl2(dcbpy)2,i am wondering whether I should add NaOH to deprotonate the carboxy groups of dcbpy. if the NaOh has to be added, why so?
