Combustion question
« on: January 24, 2007, 03:10:04 AM »
If you burn 1kg of methane in air with complete combustion how much co2 and how much water will you have as by products?

I've figured it out already - but it's been a long time since I've done chemistry at school and it's very important that my answer is correct, so would like to see someone get the same answer as me.

In reality I'll use 90% compete combustion.

Cheers

Convert the mass of methane to moles. From a combustion stoichiometry you can see the same amount of CO2 moles (or 2 times more of water). Comvertimg theit moles to masses you can obtain the masees of both products with 100 % yield. anf finally - yield is used

Is this the first step?
Write a balanced equation.

Convert the mass of methane to moles. From a combustion stoichiometry

These two steps are independent, but both are needed

I remember the process from high school, just wanted confirmation that my answer was correct, if someone would be able to figure it out   so that I could confirm my results are correct - would be much appreciated, thanks :)
