Lewis structure for Luminol
« on: March 04, 2007, 05:35:35 PM »
Hi, I'm having trouble drawing a Lewis Dot Structure for Luminol. I know how to make Lewis structures, but for this molecule, I'm having a lot of trouble.

Thanks,
Jeff

how many valence electrons are involved?
The only stupid question is a question not asked.

element    group number    valence electrons
carbon           IV                        4
Hydrogen       I                          1
Nitrogen        V                         5
Oxygen         VI                        6

Luminol = C8H7N3O2

valence electrons = (8*4)+(7*1)+(3*5)+(2*6) = 66

now just draw the structure and fill in electrons where they need to be to satisfy the octet rule.
