Manganese Reaction Help
« on: December 08, 2004, 02:24:19 AM »
I am given the reaction:

MnCl2 + KMnO4 -> ?

And I need to find the products.

I know that one is KCl but is MnO2 a product also?

Are those the only two or am I missing more?

Thanks.

The first thing you need to do is check the reaction conditions.  The products formed when MnCl2 and KMnO4 react in a basic medium (NaOH) is KCl, MnO2, NaCl, and H2O.  This reaction will not proceed in an acidic medium since the permanganate ion would oxidize the acid instead of the MnCl2.  So in an basic solution, the reaction is as follows:

2KMnO4 + 3MnCl2 + 4NaOH -> 5MnO2 + 2KCl + 4 NaCl + 2H2O.

Beginning of reaction
2KMnO4 +3MnCl2 + 2H2O = 2KCl + 5MnO2  + 4HCl
Then
4HCl + MnO2 = MnCl2 +  2H2O +  Cl2(g)

As a result:
2KMnO4 + 2MnCl2 = 2KCl + 4MnO2 + Cl2(g)
