Yes I take your point. I think this is an example of shorthand writing. So when people really mean, say, "the reaction proceeded with adequate regioselectively to give a 90/10 mix of positional isomers" they will write "the reaction gave a 90/10 mixture of regioisomers". I've done this myself many times in describing the regioisomeric outcomes (as opposed to the stereochemical outcomes) of 1,3-dipolar cycloadditions. It's easier but perhaps lazy and imprecise to describe the products as regioisomers.

It's just one of those things where everyone knows what you are talking about but I know some people get offended by it, one professor in particular that I know of, so I try to avoid it.

This thread is the first time that I have heard of someone disagreeing with these other terms like asymmetric synthesis.
