A couple of Hess' Law Questions
« on: March 25, 2007, 07:44:13 AM »
I have a lab to do which states : Determine the heat of reaction

2Mg + O2 = MgO

Use the following data:

1) MgO + 2 HCl = MgCl2 + H20
Raise in temperature is 28 C.

2) 2H2 + O2 = 2 H20

Find the heat of reaction(calculate heat of reaction from the enthalpies of formation

3. Conduct experiment to obtain data needed from the reaction

Mg + 2 HCl = MgCl2 + H2

For the experiment use 0.5g Mg and 25ml of 2M HCl

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Ok... I did the experiment (step 3) and got 1708.5 kJ/mol or something to that effect . I have no idea where to get the information for steps 1 and 2, or how to do them.  Can anyone please help me, or push me in the right direction?

Thanks in Advance!
