Need help on Hydrogen bonding question
«

Which species can form intermolecular hydrogen bonds with other molecules or ions of the same type?
1. HF
2. CH
3
F
3. NH
4
+
A) 1 only
B) 3 only
C) 1 and 3 only
D) 1,2 and 3
The answer is A, but more importantly can someone explain to me why CH
3
F can't make a hydrogen bond?
I figured that since the structure has a C in the middle with 3 H and F on the outside, doesn't the F make a hydrogen bond with a H when CH
3
F bonds with another CH
3
F?

H bonded with F,O and N is able to make hydrogen bond with F,O or N where latter each has at least one lone pair electron. That's why hydrogen bond exist between HF molecules but there is no hydrogen bond between HCl, HBr, HI.
