qualitative analysis of a solution
« on: April 14, 2007, 02:08:33 PM »
I'm working on a lab that involves testing for two ions (potassium and strontium) in an aqueous solution. The lab does not actually have to be carried out, so the avalibility of materials is not a problem. To test for strontium, I was thinking of adding a sulfate compound. A precipitate would be created, and I would filter it out and then test for potassium using a nichrome wire dipped in the solution. If I used beryllium sulfate to test for strontium, would the beryllium ions in the solution affect the flame color in any way? Filtering would remove the precipitate, but not the ions, so I need a compound that won't affect the potassium test.
