Fisher Esterification: Excess Alcohol Extra Step?
« on: April 17, 2007, 03:28:20 PM »
I can't think of what the extra step would be for Fisher Esterification if alcohol is in excess instead of the carboxylic acid.  Removal of an extra hydrogen?  I'm not really sure, and I would appreciate any help.

If one of your reactants is in excess, you have to purify your product from the excess reactant.  How is the excess carboxylic acid removed after your esterification?  Does this step serve another purpose?  Would you need to use a different method to remove your alcohol?
