(diBoron)+ Molecular Orbitals?
« on: June 16, 2007, 03:32:35 PM »
I'm stuck with this. Will anyone help me please?

5B - 1s2 2s2 2p1 - 4 Atomic Orbitals - 3 valence e-     x2
total - 8 Atomic Orbitals - 6 valence e-

As it is a cation, 8 Atomic Orbitals - 5 valence e-

4 Molecular Orbitals with Destructive Overlap -
4 Molecular Orbitals with Constructive Overlap - 5e-

I know that by the amount of e-,
the molecular electronic configuration should be:
σ1s2 σ*1s2 σ2s2 σ*2s2 π2px1

But this is not the same as above, as it says the 5 valence e- belong to constructive laps.

Help
Thanks

well, the bond order is only 1/2 in this molecule
