Need High boiling point solvent
« on: June 14, 2007, 12:31:21 AM »
Dear all:
I am looking for a high boiling point solvent in my experiment and its characters are needed as follows:

      1. the boiling point higher than 200 oC
      2. stable in air
      3. could be easily eliminated by water
      4. ferrocene will dissolve in it.

Thanks in advance for your help. :)

Sounds like triglyme (bp 220 deg C) or tetraglyme (bp 275 deg C) is what you want, both are high boiling point ethers. i imagine ferrocene will dissolve in them, but i don't know for sure.
I've used tetraglyme for a special wittig before, its a pain to dry but other than that nothing untoward happens. They are both miscible with water. Clairiant keeps a data/advert page for them at http://www.glymes.com

2-ethoxy ethanol (ethyl carbitol) with B.P. 202 deg could also be a good choise.

You can find different glycols with high boiling points in www.sigma.com site by entering "triethylene glycol" in the search field.

Was NMP(1-Methyl-pyrrolidin-2-one)  up to the mustard?
