Electrolysis
« on: June 21, 2007, 01:55:31 PM »
I am desperate to obtain one of the alkali metals and have been for some time. I have decided that electrolysis of potassium may work but am not very sure. Can the oxygen be separated from molten potassium oxide and if not what is the best way of obtaining any of the alkali metals?
Many thanks

If you are really desperate you should start with some general chemistry books - your question suggests that you know nothing on the subject. Alkali metals production is pretty difficult - it requires high temperatures and byproducts are either explosive or poisonous. Not a thing you want to try at home.

You can purchase sodium or potassium at many different websites
Ones I have used are:
www.sciencekit.com
www.unitednuclear.com
In Mother Russia, chemicals bond you!
