Why hexane is use in halogen-halide reactions?

Hello all, i'm facing a chemical problem. I wonder why hexane is use in the halogen-helide reactions? Hope i can get the answer asap. THX!!! Cheesy Cheesy

let say if i'm using KI to react with Cl-, why i must use hexane in order to show the colour of the reaction? what's it's purpose?

As far as I remeber - acetone is used for exchanging Cl with I in organic aliphatic derivatives.
RCl + KI = RI + KCl

For reaction Cl2 with KI various organic solvents give a specific color of iodine solution
Cl2 + 2KI = I2 + 2KCl
