0.55 N NaOH to 0.5N NaOH
« on: August 09, 2007, 06:29:16 PM »
Hi

I am not a high school student, but I know I learned how to do this in High School.

I have  3,980 mls of 0.55N NaOH solution and would like to dilute it to 0.5N. How much deionized water do I add? I know I need to use the formula C1V1=C2V2, but can't figure out the solution. I have the solution in a 4L bottle.

thanks for your help.

To use C1V1=C2V2 you would need to convert the mL to L. And in this particular you can consider 0.55 N to be the same as 0.55M. So it just becomes C1V1/C2

The thing is, you have 3.98L in a 4L bottle.  You can only add 20mL of water; but it will take more then that.

Now, if you want to make 4L of 0.50 M solution, that is different. Just use C1V1/C2 again, but C1 is 0.5, V1
is 4L and C2 is 0.55 M. That will tell you how many L of the 0.55 solution to add to a 4L bottle and dilute with water.
