Is it called pTSA, p-TsOH or PTS?
« on: April 01, 2007, 02:46:45 PM »
I have found several ways of shorten the name para-toluene sulfonic acid (the monohydrate). Which one is more general to use:

pTSA, PTS or p-TsOH?

 ???  :)
No single thing abides, but all things flow.
Fragment to fragment clings, and thus they grow
Until we know and name them.
Then by degrees they change and are no more
The things we know.

PTSA  is the only way ive seen it written.
The only stupid question is a question not asked.

I know p-TsOH as an abbreviation as well...(at least in german, it's very common).
So, there might be another person, who has seen "PTS", too.  ;D
It's just an abbreviation, and doesn't obey the rules of IUPAC.

I´ve always seen it written "pTsOH" and now I was looking for the name behind the abbreviation PTS, to see it´s the same thing?! :-)

It´s like when they write CH2Cl2 DCM....come on....:-)

I see PTSA and p-TsOH all the time, but I don't think that I have ever seen just PTS.  Are you sure it's the same thing?

This is still less confusing than all the abbreviations for iodobenzene diacetate....

I'll third the concern over PTS - to me this would probably be the 4-methylphenylsulfonyl radical, so the acid would have an extra OH, the primary amide NH2, the methyl ester OMe etc tacked on the end.

Al least in my reference, the authors write "PTS" in the chemical equation and p-toluene sulfonic acid in text.
