icosahedral packing density
« on: August 17, 2007, 09:51:10 PM »
I need to do an experiment to study the density of icosahedral packing. However, I'm not exactly sure how to create an apparatus to allow for icosahedral packing (and for that matter, I am having a difficult time visualizing it). I've done an experiment that studies hexagonal close packing where the procedures was essentially to hexagonally pack marbles in a cylinder and use water to measure the packing density. Is there a way to translate this kind of a set-up to icosahedral packing? Also, does anyone know where I can find more information on icosahedral packing (including maybe some pictures)?
