need help with stoichiometry problem
« on: September 13, 2007, 06:59:59 PM »
Well Ive been taken chem for 2 years now and i still dont understand how to do some basic stuff like stoichiometry XD....yeah its pretty bad, ive been attempting to do this one question for about 2 hours now and seeing as how i cant get it to work, i need whatever help i can get now.

 The problem says Calcium Hydroxide reacts with an aq solution of sodium carbonate to produce sodium hydroxide and calcium carbonate.

 So i balanced the equation and got Ca(OH)2+ Na2CO3 --> 2NaOH + CaCO3

 Assuming that i balanced it correctly and have the right formulas (which im also pretty bad at doing XD) the actual problem says

- What mass of sodium carbonate is needed to completely react with 175.0g of Calcium hydoxide.
    Im not sure how i am supose to solve for this....anyone think they can help?

175.0 g Calcium Hydroxide is how many mols?
For every mol of Calcium Hydroxide how many mols of sodium carbonate do you need?

175g of Ca(OH)2 is 74.093 g/mol so...2.36 mols.

So if 2.36 mols of Ca(OH)2 is suppose to be used up completely, i need x amount of Sodium Carbonate now. Hmmm...I'll see what I can do with that

EDIT: Okay, Im kinda slow at this....Can you explain how I can solve for how many mols are needed to react with sodium carbonate now knowing that i have 2.36 mols of Calcium hydoxide?

EDIT 2:  Nevermind, I figured it out on my own! Yay~ I feel smart now XD

 Thanks for the help

Always remember the term "mole ratios."
"The nine most terrifying words in the English language are, 'I'm from the government and I'm here to help.' " -Ronald Reagan

"I'm for anything that gets you through the night, be it prayer, tranquilizers, or a bottle of Jack Daniels." -Frank Sinatra
