How to find the formula of epsom salt
« on: September 17, 2007, 01:17:07 AM »
Magnesium sulfate forms a hydrate known as Epsom salts.  A chemistryhead dissolved 1.24 grams of this hydrate in water and added a barium chloride solution until the precipitation of barium sulfate was complete.  The precipitate was filtered, dried, and found to weigh 1.174 grams.

How many moles of BaSO4 were formed?
   I got 5.03 x 10-3
How many moles of MgSO4 were in the original sample?
I also got 5.03 x 10-3

How many grams of water were in the original sample?
 I got 0.63449 g H20

Determine the formula of Epsom Salts.

We have a quiz tomorrow and this is the problem with the same difficulty as the ones on the test. I'm so scared.
