Water Vaporization Question

The heat of vaporization of water is 540 cal/g. If you apply 45.0 kcal to 100.0g of water, what volume of water vaporizes?


I came up with couple of answers just wanted to make sure I did it right  please show work.

I was thinking :

1g --540cal

so

100g -- 54000cal

xg    --4500cal

then 4500x100 /54000 =8.3

what do u think

It asks about 45 kcal = 45000 cal.  You have the answer for 4.5kcal = 4500 cal.

Also, this answer assumes that the 100g of water are at 100oC already.  Note that your answer doesn't need to be as complicated (the 100g part doesn't matter).  All you need to do is divide 45000cal by 540 cal/g (which is basically the same thing you did but less work).
