Alkyl chloride preparation...

Should the SOCl2-C6H5N system be used specifically for methyl or primary alcohols?  HCl(aq) wouldn't work, right?

Gaseous HCl (not water solution) would work for hight boiling alcohols (from 5 carbon atoms)

Okay.  So if I want only the monochloro derivative of methanol, SOCl2-C6H5N system is the approach?  Same for primary alcohol?  Makes sense, 'cept the HCl(g) approach for high-boiling primary alcohols...

Any Industrial Method for chlorination of C1, C2...., C5 Alchols.
