REDOX reaction in ACIDIC Sol'n
« on: January 28, 2005, 02:16:10 AM »
Ok so this is the equation:

As2S3(s) + NO3-(aq) ® H3AsO4(aq) + NO(g) + S8(s)

and I've tried to split it into 2 half reactions:

i) NO3^-(aq) -> NO(g)
NO3-(aq) + 4H^+(aq) -> NO(g) + 2H2O(l)
3e^- + NO3^-(aq) +4H^+(aq) -> NO(g) + 2H2O(l)

ii) As2S3(s) -> H3AsO4(aq) + S8(s)

but I can't balance this one - where did I go wrong?

I end up with these HUGE coefficients

24As2S3 + 80NO3^- + 24OH^+ -> 48H3AsO4 + 9S8 + 80NO + 48H2O

but not only are the coefficients really big but my answer is wrong too - and I don't know what I did wrong :'(

192H20 + 24As2S3  = 48H3AsO4 + 9S8 + 240H+  + 240e-
240e- + 320H+ + 80NO3-    = 80NO  + 160 H20

32H2O + 24As2S3 + 80H+ + 80NO3- =  48H3AsO4 + 9S8 + 80NO

                 144  H 144
                 272  O 272
                 28  As 48

                 80   N 80
