Heating NAHCO3??
« on: October 14, 2007, 10:09:27 AM »
OK. So for a lab in chemistry the other day we had to heat NAHCO3 and now we have to write the balanced chemical equation for it.
We have come up with:
NaHCO3 ------> NAOH+CO2
or
Na2CO3 + H2O+ CO2------->Na2O + CH4

If someone could help us out, it would be greatly appriciated!  ;D

According to me the rxn should be ;

2 NaHCO3 ---> Na2CO3 + H2O + CO2

 Na2CO3 + H2O + CO2 --> 2NaHCO3

 2NaHCO3--> Na2CO3 + H2O + CO2  ;D

Na2CO3 does not decompose on heating, NaHCO3 does.

i know it's a late reply, just thought i;d give the logic behind this.

Na2CO3 does not decompose on heating

It does, it just needs higher temperature.
