Orbital Hybridization?
« on: October 27, 2007, 02:09:43 PM »
I REALLY DON'T UNDERSTAND THIS.

So we're supposed to like do a chart for different compounds, and we're supposed to draw the orbitals and then the hybridization. So yeah a bunch of random up and down arrows that really confuse me. I don't get that...Like when I have to do sp3d or sp3d2 hybridization??? What is that??

And then we're supposed to draw the Lewis structure of the compound. And I kinda know how to do that, except when we have to draw the unshared pair. I don't know how to tell if theres an unshared pair, or how many there are..And it's realy confusing.

And then the electric and molecular geometry...that's..just..really confusing.
Can anyone like..explain these things to me? Cuz our teacher REALLY doesn't teach very well.

This is alot to explain on a message board.

Have a read of these:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lewis_structure
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/VSEPR
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Orbital_hybridisation

Then if you need a hand with some more specific aspects it will be easier to get help here.
