Lab question
« on: November 08, 2007, 08:09:43 PM »
Hi, I'm doing a lab write up on a Mg + HCL reaction in a styrofoam cup. I used about .1g Mg and about 50ml of HCL. My delta T for the experiment runs ranges from 5.28 to 11.27. When I calculate the delta Hr using HCL specific heat of 4.18 J/gK, I get something like 2453.23 J. Does this sound right? Then, when I calculate the number of moles of product for each run, I get about 2.87 moles. Does this sound right?

I just need to see if I am doing these beginning calculations correct before I move on to the molar delta Hr

Thanks!

Your change in temperature has a very huge range, lots of error.

As to if you are correct in your calculations. I dunno.
"about 0.1g Mg" is very vague. But the hardest part is "about 50 mL of HCL". First, it is HCl, second about is vague, and third unless we know the concentration of the HCl we have no clue.

Also, show your calculations.
And, you are writing a balanced equation and accounting for the stoichiometry of the reaction, right?
