Diamonds

Diamond is simply an allotrope of carbon, each atom being bonded to four others.
But what is at the edge of diamond? Are the bonds of the carbon twisted about, or is there some other element that is bonded at the edge?

Edit: Oops, I did a search and I found the exact same question and supposedly the studies on it are inconclusive.
