Conversion and Cancelling Units
« on: November 24, 2007, 09:20:15 PM »
Hello:

I'm just a bit confused as to how to cancel the units in this question:

Calculate the height of a column of liquid benzene (d=0.879 g cm-3), in meters, required to exert a pressure of 0.970atm

So hb = .0970atm/(9.80665 m s-2 x 0.879 g cm-3)
                        = 11.3 meters

I get the numbers right, I just don't understand what to convert/cancel etc....

Any help would be appreciated!

Regards,

Michelle

Can you be a little more specific? As the way you have the math written does not give the answer given. How can you get the numbers right without converting units properly?

1 atm = 101325 Pa where 1 Pa = 1 N m-2 = 1 kg m-1 s-2

1 cm3 = 1 mL
