AP chemistry question!!!
« on: November 25, 2007, 10:42:52 AM »
how to start this problem,

a water soluble compound of gold and chlorine is treated with silver nitrate to convert the chlorine completely to silver chloride, AgCl.  In an experiment, 328 mg of the compound gave 464 mg of silver chloride.  calculate the percentage of Cl in the compound.  what is its empirical formula?

the answers given are 35.0% Cl and AuCl^3 (Gold(3)Chloride)

Always start with a balanced chemical equation.

I find with these sorts of questions that writing out how much of everything I have, and how much 1 mole of each substance weighs, in a little semi-table I construct right below my balanced equation makes things much much easier :)
